Bis Partners with Whitehaven Coal to Deliver Girls Rocking Resources Event in Gunnedah

Bis, a leading provider of specialised services to the resources sector, has partnered with Whitehaven Coal to deliver Girls Rocking Resources, a Bis initiative for young women aimed at showcasing the broad range of roles and career opportunities available in the resources sector.

Bis developed the concept as part of the company’s aims to encourage greater diversity and inclusion, which includes promotion of the wide range of careers available in the resources industry to young girls in our communities. The inaugural event was held in October last year in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia, in partnership with Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines.

20 young women from Gunnedah High School attended the event, which included site tours of the Bis depot and Whitehaven’s Tarrawonga mine, hands-on STEM activities, panel discussions with employees from both companies, and inspiring talks from young females working in the resources sector.

Bis Chief Executive Officer Brad Rogers said the company was proud to partner with Whitehaven Coal to show the attendees the diverse career opportunities on offer in the resources sector.

“We believe a diverse workforce is a strong workforce. Whitehaven are also strong advocates for diversity and inclusion within the sector, making this partnership a great fit. Working together, we are helping to provide a platform to foster relationships with the next generation of women entering the workforce.”

Commenting on the initiative, Whitehaven Coal Managing Director and CEO Paul Flynn said, “Careers in mining are diverse and rewarding, so it’s great to be working with Bis – one of our key commercial partners – to showcase the range of exciting opportunities on offer to young women in our local area.”

Also in attendance were members of the Gunnedah Girls Academy, a leading provider of school based programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanded girls in Australia.

As a locally based miner, Whitehaven Coal is a sponsor of the Girls Academy at Gunnedah High School, in part enabling the Academy’s success to date. Thanks to engagement with the program, students at the Girls Academy now have a higher attendance rate than the broader Gunnedah High School student body.

Bis have been partnering with the Girls Academy since early 2018, supporting girls around the country through education, mentoring and empowerment programs.

“At Bis, we foster an inclusive culture which embraces difference,” said Brad Rogers.

“We also provide a range of opportunities in our business for women and Indigenous Australians to build a career in the mining industry. This partnership provides a valuable opportunity for both Bis and Girls Academy students.”

More Girls Rocking Resources events are planned around the country later this year.
